Susie Knows Mississippi Ave.

N Mississippi: Vibrant, eclectic, artful, and totally Portland. The revitalization of N Mississippi began over 5 years ago. Today it has become a “destination” street of Portland. Meaning people make an outing of visiting Mississipi. An anchor on the street is the The ReBuilding Center which is a project of “Our United Villages, ” a nonprofit organization that finds the good in existing resources and making them resourceful all over again. To have something like this right on Mississippi St is pretty great. It provides all different resources to make home improvements affordable while keeping the importance of salvaging these items. As a whole improving our environment and creating an eco-friendly, healthy, resourceful place to live. Next time you are thinking of replacing your door be sure to stop by the Rebuilding Center and I’m sure you will find a great replacement, you can even donate your old door once you find the new one. Warning, you might end up leaving with a new bath and bathroom sink too.

If you are looking for good food this is another street with a wide variety. From food carts to cafes to fine dining. Want to find some southern charm? Checkout Miss Delta’s where you can get the sweetest iced tea in town and some of the best chicken and waffles. Be sure to try their in house hot sauce with the chicken and waffles, seems like a weird combination, but is always recommended by the waiters. Want a good breakfast on a Sunday morning or even a Tuesday night? Try out Gravy, right across the street from Miss Delta’s, serving breakfast all day and night!

N Mississippi is a historic neighborhood with a modern feel to it. While strolling the street you see the old brick buildings home to cute restaurants yet nestled among new modernized apartment complexes. You can’t help but notice all the young adults enjoying drinks on their patios and looking over to the sight of slight chaos below. When it gets late the young people can go down to the street and try a flight at the Stormbreaker Brewery or have happy hour drinks at UCHU sushi. For a list of all restaurants and shops check out:

Mississippi Studios is another must visit on this street, especially if you are into music. It’s a great music venue where all different types of bands come to perform. You can also rent the venue, if you know any aspiring musical artists they can rent the place for studio sessions or even video shoots. It’s not only for the musically gifted though, it’s a great venue for birthdays, reunions and weddings too. Tonight they have the Screaming Females performing, a young rock group from New Jersey. It’s a 21 and over event, if interested check out their website, tickets are still available!

This area of town is a mecca for young creatives and those who want quick access to downtown and the I-5 corridor. The area is filled with many different styles of architecture, single family residences have now become less affordable. It is hard to find a single family home for under $400,000 in this booming neighborhood. There are options for condo living as well. Theres’s a great listing pictured below in the Williams district not too far from Mississippi Ave. My work/live townhouse just blocks to both the WiIliams Corridor and Mississippi ave is a property that won’t last at 494k. Open sunday 1-3pm.
